Here’s a great love homework assignment for both guys and gals.  I call it the “Love Post-it Activity”  This is something my wife actually first did for me the first day I taught summer school and it really made me feel supported.  Whenever I start a new job or have an interview for a promotion etc., I get self-conscious like everyone.  In this case my wife’s love homework really pumped me up and made my first day truly rock.  I woke up to my alarm in the usual way and found the bathroom mirror covered with post-its bearing little thoughts she had used loving writing skills to produce.  They said things like:

• I know you’ll do great.
• You’re the best teacher in the district.
• They are LUCKY to have you
• I wish you’d tutor me

You get the idea.  These meant so much to me because I actually was a little apprehensive about the people at the new school I’d be working with.  They had a reputation of being a little snobby and so I put the post-its in my wallet for moral support later.  I looked back into our bed and saw she was passed out asleep so I didn’t thank her.  I called her later and gave her a super duper thank you and took her out to a movie that night.  As it turned out, the summer teaching went stellar and I made a lot of really important contacts that summer.  Who’s to say it wasn’t because of those post it notes and my positive attitude as a result?

Do we realize the huge impact we have on our spouse’s self esteem?  We should.

Well, that was 2002.  Now it’s 7 years later and I had recently applied for a Summer Principal position.  I wanted it badly, partly for the extra money and partly for the incredible experience of being in charge of a team of teachers.  That’s an incredible thing to have on a teaching resume.  To make a long story short, yesterday was my wife’s 32nd birthday and I recalled how amazing those post-its were.  I’d already gotten her a day at the health spa as her gift but I thought it would be so neat if I did the post-it thing on the bathroom mirror wishing her a happy birthday.  I covered the mirror with them.  Just like 7 years ago, she was fast asleep.  I got a call around 11am on my cell and she was so happy.  Her exact words were: “I feel so loved.” That was wonderful to hear.

I think this is a great love homewaork assignment for you guys or gals.  It does take some thought and creativity, but I think it will be worth your while.

As a “post note” (no pun intended) I just found out today that I was chosen to be the Summer School Principal at my school site this Summer and my supportive wife and I are both delighted. 1. A lunchbox
2. The bathroom mirror – can also use lipstick or fog it up if you’re feeling really creative!
3. Spread shaving cream on a table and write “I Love You” in the shaving cream.
4. Tape a note to their coffee or tea if they drink either regularly
5. Put one of those notes in the wiper of their car
6. Or tape it to the steering wheel
7. Put in their tool box
8. After you do laundry, stick in one of their pants or shirt pockets
