I think being comfortable and outgoing will help anyone overcome being shy. I know I was very shy growing up myself.

I think step two is a very important step - and one people often miss out. I started building my confidence by asking people who were completely un-intimidating to me (such as old ladies) simple questions like, "Can you tell where library is?" It's a great way to warm up and build confidence before trying to chat with someone you're attracted to.

I think most shy people aren't shy in every situation. The key is to pay attention to what sort of circumstances you feel confident in (maybe it is when talking to only one person, or about a particular subject) and then build upon that.
