Today is going to be yet another one of those “little bit of this” and a “little bit of that” posts. Why? Because it’s my blog and I’ll write what I want to, write what I want to…(Ah, yes, I am also one of those people who will quote/misuse song lyrics, too!)
Actually the real reason I am not writing a more quality post is because I have been feverishly working on a new design for IMBL. Feverishly is not really the right word, but it has been a bit time consuming.
I am going to attempt to create my very first ever wordpress theme. It seems pretty daunting. But after looking at thousands of them I just can’t find what I want. The template php wordpress functions stuff (like those technical terms I’m using?) I think I have figured out. The CSS I think is going to be a lot harder, since making things float to where they are supposed to be is not one of my strengths.
Anyways, this is what I am thinking of what the new theme will kind of look like:

This is just the rough sketch, so if anyone has any suggestions on what they would like to see, please let me know! After all, I just write this blog - you’re the ones who come and visit and have to read/navigate through it. Are there any features you’d like to see? Are there designs that you love I should be inspired by? Is this theme too dark? Now is your chance to tell me anything you’d like to see different design wise on IMBL!
Based on my inexperience and other calculations…it should be ready in about 5 months. (I really hope it doesn’t take me that long!!) I think it will be a fun learning experience though
That’s really all I wanted to ramble about today…after all it’s Friday. Fridays are my favorite days, and usually my kind of lazy-before-the-weekend days. Next week I’ve got another “100 Love Songs” post planned and am waiting for the launch of a contest I agreed to sponsor, so it should be a good week. Want to stay updated on what’s going on? i like it! the only thing i would personally change (and it’s not even that big of a deal) is making all the BLUE stuff PINK. i love pink. pink is my favorite color. so i’m a bit biased. but i do love pastels mixed with darker colors, so it passes my inspection
I thought about pink…but then I feel like it’s too “girly” - though maybe I could sneak a little in somewhere
Hey Chelle,
It’s a nice theme. So I gotta ask Is the title to this post any refference at all to the cure song “Friday I’m in Love” or was that pure chance.
Phil
I wondered if anybody would catch the reference to the song
Good job Phil
I am glad you are working on a new theme, and also, the same has happened for me where I cannot find a theme good enough. I can edit the hell out of one, but sometimes I rip them up or tear the stylesheet apart(this happened once, yesterday, and fortunately I fixed it by digging up the code from the zip files). I think I might create one myself, but I am after an interior design theme, and those might be a little harder to make.
I have a question about making a theme, what do you work with? How can you turn it into a theme? Is there a program? I do know of a template generator, but I don’t know how that could create a premium theme(unless they make a simple one, then edit the hell out of it with features and sell it). What do you work with?
Also, about the theme you are creating.
I think you should have a strong energy or love background image, but one that the transparency has been modified quite a bit so that you can see it a little but not too much to make it distracting. I know how to get the image in if it is the right one, right size, and right color.
I don’t think soooo much gray should be in it. If you want gray then stick to the lighter shades.
You want to have a wide range of colors, something palatable yet not too strong (yes I am also referring to food here).
As far as theme features and little details, those will have to wait until I see the theme.
I saw a theme the other day Nathaniel that could be perfect for an interior design blog.
It’s the “loft” one on my list here:
http://upstartagent.com/2008/08/real-estate-wordpress-themes-for-your-real-estate-blog/
(Follow that link - they have some other good ones there if that one doesn’t do it for you)
Just swap out the pictures & if you want a light background change that in the css file.
I will be writing my theme from scratch using notepad. Yup, the same notepad that I always thought was useless that comes pre-installed on every windows computer. Probably not the easy way of doing it but it’s the only thing i know how to do!! Thanks for the suggestions, I will keep that in mind!
Thanks Chelle for the themes. I have seen the loft theme before, and maybe downloaded it, and it is on consideration list. I also seem to like the lux house theme.
I like the arrangement of the elements. If you don’t like pink, a blend of blue and black graphics are background can be nice. If you can’t still decide, you can view some good theme from Dezzain.com and customized it to fit on your preference.

I love the new theme! You did a very good job on making it subtle but loving, I like the faint pink. You might add a little of the same pink to the header, but for a few weeks I think you have your “perfect wordpress theme.”
Great work. You never asked my opinion before now and you technically aren’t asking now but …
I don’t make themes anymore. I made three months ago and they all had issues.
Making a theme gets you better at tweaking themes though and that is the limit of what I will try.
I applaud you for doing what many only think about! Hopefully you’re grooving with the results! Ultimately you are the one who needs to be happy.
